What Mineral Makeup is Actually Made Of
Mineral makeups are made of minerals – not too surprising right? But the types of minerals in mineral makeups differ widely. Most of them contain mica, zinc oxide and titanium oxide, which have been primary components of good makeup products for years and were originally introduced on their own about thirty years ago, though not with overwhelming success due to marketing failures rather than performance. Some types of mineral makeup also contain bismuth, also a mineral but not a natural one. Rather, it is a byproduct of copper and lead processing.
The best mineral makeups (we like Purity by Mineral Science) contain only natural minerals and not byproducts like bismuth that can be legitimately called minerals but do not occur in nature and are generally just used to “bulk up” products. What is actually significant about mineral makeup is what is not included in their ingredients: artificial fragrances, synthetic dyes and “binders” that hold the makeup tightly to your skin. True mineral makeups do not contain these compounds and are therefore significantly better for your skin.
